The big news of the week is the launch of the Open Handset Alliance and the Android OS backed by Google. We chat about its possible effects on the market and the developer scene. Other topics discussed include GMail IMAP, Amazon Web Services and Redhat, the Asus Eee PC, Radiohead and Fedora 8.

Pete, not sure why you had so many issues with Gmail IMAP. I'm using it fine with both Thunderbird and Tiger Mail.app.

I thought the implementation was quite elegant, given the fundamental differences between Gmail and IMAP. IMAP assumes a folder hierarchy and Gmail uses a more modern tag/label system for categorising email. From a conceptual point of view you have to get used to the idea that email can live in *multiple* folders: namely the "[Gmail]/All Mail" folder plus all the folders corresponding to whatever labels you've defined.

FWIW I found this guide for setting up Thunderbird for Gmail IMAP to be quite helpful also.
