Install freedv on Ubuntu 14.10

Just a note for others who might run in to the same issue. Freedv depends on libtiff4 which is not available for Ubuntu 14.10. Here's how to install freedv and avoid that bump in the road.

# grab the library from an old version of ubuntu
wget http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/universe/t/tiff3/libtiff4_3.9.7-2ubuntu1_amd64.deb
sudo dpkg -i libtiff4_3.9.7-2ubuntu1_amd64.deb

sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list
# add these lines to /etc/apt/sources.list
deb http://files.freedv.org/debian/ stable main
deb-src http://files.freedv.org/debian/ stable main

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install freedv

Now you'll find the app if you search from the dock.

Peter,
I installed freedv using synaptic and freedv listed all my audio devices including my Signalink USB.
When I click the 'start' button on freedv it crashes.
(the signalink works great with fldigi)
I am running Ubuntu 14.10.
I completeley removed the synaptic install of freedv, then used your procedure substituting "i386" for "amd64". My machine errored with "amd64".
Your procedure ran flawlessly, however I noticed it installed the same ver. of freedv as synaptic (0.96.6 beta) and still crashes when I click the start button.

Any ideas ? Things for me to check ?
Is freedv only meant for 64 bit machines ??

David,

Yes, I'm running the 64 bit version of Ubuntu but my guess is that the audio isn't set up. Did you configure it and if so, click the test button to make sure it's happy at that point.

The problem did end up being my audio set up. I was setting transmit audio to none on both mic and radio.
I set those to the Signalink and the computer sound card (for mic) and it started just fine.
I am surprised a setting that was not what the program wanted would cause it to crash and close the window.
